Lisa Mitchell has beaten a fiercely competitively field of artists to win the 2009 Australian Music Prize (Amp).
Mitchell was named the winner of the $30,000 prize for her debut album, Wonder, at an awards ceremony on Friday.
“From over 200 entries and more specifically, a brilliant shortlist of nine, The Amp’s panel of judges has decided that the best Australian album released in 2009 is Wonder,” Amp director Scott Murphy said at the ceremony.
In addition to the $30,000 cash prize, Mitchell also receives a $30,000 on-air advertising package, courtesy of The Amp principal partner Channel [V]. Both Channel [V] and MAX will also be airing an artist special of the winner.
Earlier this month, fellow shortlisters, Oh Mercy, took out $15,000 as winners of the Red Bull Award for outstanding potential.
Oh Mercy released their debut album, Privileged Woes, last year.
Mitchell was announced the winner of the fifth Amp on March 12 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.
