Almost 50 people have been arrested on the first day of Sydney’s Big Day Out festival.
Police made 48 arrests for a variety of offences, New South Wales police media said.
Police intend to continue with their crackdown on drugs tomorrow on the second day of the two-day event.
“I warn young people who are attending the Big Day Out tomorrow that if you are thinking of bringing drugs to this event, you will be arrested,” Commander of Operation Big Day Out, superintendent Rod Smith said.
“Tomorrow we are expecting temperatures above 40 degrees and the combination of heat, alcohol and or drugs can be deadly.
“I am pleading to people to come along to day 2 of this event tomorrow and take head of the warnings. Pace yourself and limit your alcohol consumption. Drink plenty of water to remain hydrated due to the heat and show some personal responsibility,” he said.
The arrests today relate to the possession of drugs including cannabis, ecstasy and MDMA.
Smith said police have been working with event organisers to ensure the event remained safe and fun.
This year’s Big Day Out features Muse, Lily Allen, Placebo, Kasabian, Jet, Rise Against, Foals, Mastodon, Powderfinger, Josh Pyke, The Dead Weather, Grinspoon, The Temper Trap, Karnivool, Monsters of Folk, Tame Impala, Dappled Cities, The Middle East, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Regular John and Former Child Stars.
