There’s no doubt Ben lee is a sucker for bubble gum pop music.

The Aussie singer has delivered his fair share of commercial pop with previous efforts in Awake Is The New Sleep right back to Breathing Tornados.

Lees latest record, The Rebirth of Venus travels a similar vein, though there is a marked difference.

The cute pop is now a little older and wiser. Each song now proudly bares a purpose.

From the ever enthusiastic Sing, and What’s So Bad to the not so tongue in cheek I Love Pop Music, Lee has definitely met his cutie-pie quota.

In a rare moment, Lee has also let down his guard on this album.

Two tracks really go far to show Lee as a serious musician.

Rise Up is the first. A beautiful acoustic ballad that catches you by surprise.

The second is Families Cheating At Board Games.

This track is the albums highlight for me. I’m not sure if the simple melody of keyboards, guitar or spellbinding piano is what adds to the killer mix of Lee’s vocals. Or if its the whole package.

But whatever it is, this song is a must listen.

Lees new album is the surprise package so far this year. Don’t bag the guy’s music, just buy it.

Four and a half stars
