Beautiful Girl’s McHugh goes solo

Posted on 22 July 2008 by Kate Kachor

The front man with The Beautiful Girls has taken time out from the Sydney band to record a solo album.

Mat McHugh will release his debut solo record, Seperatista!, this September with his band, Mat McHugh & The Black Bird.

The album was recorded with Ian Pritchett at Noisegate Studios in Sydney. It was produced by McHugh and Pritchett and mastered by Don Bartley at Benchmark.

McHugh released the first single off Seperatista!, Darling The Scene, on July 19.

“I was going to record it in America but I decided to come home and work with Ian Pritchett again. I think we’ve been working towards a sound for a long time together and i didn’t want to sacrifice that in favour of sounding ‘American’,” a post on McHugh’s website said.

“What happened was that I had a bunch of songs laying around that were all based around the acoustic guitar and, seeing as TBG [The Beautiful Girls] is increasingly becoming more of a ‘rock’ three piece, i decided to go for it.

As well as commenting on his new album, McHugh used his post to squash rumours that the solo album meant he and his Beautiful Girls band members had split.

“TBG hasn’t broken up. Far from it. There are already lots of ideas for a new TBG album but at this stage that may be a little ways off,” he said.

McHugh intends to head out on tour in support of his solo album in October and November. Not dates have been confirmed as yet.

The track listing for Seperatista! is:
1. Under the landslide
2. Loneliness
3. It isn’t me
4. Bad blood
5. Fall to pieces
6. Ring the alarm / over and over
7. Numb
8. The bottle
9. Darling, this scene must end
10. I’ll be for you
11. Still be your friend
